. Ive got a design for a kickup rudder that was included in the plans and had some questions. This devise should be perfect for your boat. Bolger Cartopper and many many other kick-up type rudders are held in the down position by rudder cheek friction achieved via a sufficiently tight pivot bolt.

Since the planned rudder is deeper than the existing one why would you even need an end plate. The slab rudder always wanted to kick-up either due to drag or just due to buoyancy. When the rudder grounds it pulls the line out of the cam cleat allowing the rudder to kick up.
